Okay, we know we said last week it would be a double feature this week. The producers are really putting the pressure on. However, life is lifing, so unfortunately (or fortunately for those who could care less about the latest Ridley Scott flick) The Dog Stars is not included today.
HOWEVER. Josh was lured by friends, and The Denver Book Society, to attend a screening on Sunday with the author of the book the movie is based on. Feel free to reach out for thoughts on The Dog Stars, or to bully him into writing a bonus scorecard.

End Credit Thoughts
The movie that was made but almost never seen. Unfortunately, this happens more often than we’d think. It’s sad. Depressing. Soul-crushing. HOWEVER, in this case, the cinema gods orchestrated some chaos and brought this movie to life for the public eye.
A blend of animation and live action, this movie defies reality, creating a world akin to Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), Space Jam (1996), etc etc. We thought this might be odd or pull us out of the story, but Coyote vs ACME doesn't. We liked it. Nay. We loved it. It works well and makes the movie effortlessly funny. There’s a gag every other minute—cartoons getting shit dropped on them, blown up, hurt in ways that would be life-ending for humans—keeping the heart and spirit of the Looney Toons. Blending animation with real people, places, and things lets the human characters experience unrealistic harm without realistic consequences, alongside the toons, making suspension of disbelief an easy lift.
The physical humor pairs well with strong writing. Quick, witty dialogue or non-verbal signage had us in stitches. Will Forte, as the low-profile, easy-going lawyer Kevin Avery, has impeccable comedic timing in his line delivery. A great casting for someone who is believable as a nonchalant and not-caring attorney who might have a heart buried deep—to protect himself, not because he’s soulless—if one digs deep enough.
Wylie E. Coyote plays himself so that’s dope as hell, and the rest of the cast, no matter how much screen time, is a blast; each adding their own flair and flavor of antics. Martha Kelly can say anything in that monotone voice and nothing-behind-the-eyes look, and it will draw a laugh from us.
The buddy-villain duo of John Cena, as ACME’s top corporate lawyer, and P.J. Byrne, as Cena’s right-hand litigator, are excellent as the antagonists. But it’s not just their performances; their line deliveries, their knack for playing comedic roles- it’s their swagged-out suits and dope ass bolo ties that elevate their characters. The costume department was on POINT.
We know New Mexico can be a hot spot for film productions, but having the state and the best city in the world (are we biased?) as the setting for the film was a joy. Perfect place for a speeding roadrunner and a dedicated-to-a-fault coyote to have their fun. Also an incredible place for a lawyer who wants to fly under the radar, only to accidentally fly too close to the sun. Anyone who has driven I-25 over the last couple of decades has probably seen the “Hurt? Call Burt” billboards. Well-known landmarks, international festivals, street names—all these little details make for an exciting watch for anyone familiar with the Land of Enchantment.
A classic David vs Goliath, a true underdog story, a tale told as old as time. Is it overdone? Sure. Is it tired? Can’t be if they keep making them. Who doesn’t like the little guy winning? (Josh made us add this line). Best part: all ages could enjoy watching. We love a movie that entertains across generations. A fun watch that is unexpectedly one of our fav theater watches this year.

Okay, we know this isn’t a movie. But we just discussed on our latest podcast episode (see below) that season 1 of True Detectives is arguably one of the best single seasons of any tv series. Ever. Mainly credited to the insane chemistry between McConaughey and Harrelson. As Eric would say, they have the JUICE.
And it’s on Apple TV?! They’ve been consistently pumping out award winning bangers so we know it’s in great hands. Buckle up, buttercups, and get ready for this wild ride.
