End credit thoughts
Every second counts. This movie doesn’t just show you this with each tick of the clock—nay, each tenth of a tick—this movie makes you believe it.
Most of us do not know much about the sport Formula 1. But that does not take away from the experience. Everything we need to know is built into the story, and not in a whacking over the head kind of way. It’s subtle. It’s in the details. The filmmakers build the world of F1 and Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) word by word, action by action, brick by brick; that welcomes any person, regardless of racing knowledge, to give F1 a chance.
It wasn’t surprising that the star of the film’s production was the sound and film score. Don’t get us wrong, the camera work is solid. Varying shots that bring you into the mind and tiny-ass driver seat that makes you feel claustrophobic at 250mph. We all know Joseph Kosinski can direct the hell out of a flick. He gave us Top Gun: Maverick and the shimmy of the summer. But the theater reverberated with car engines roaring and hot tires squealing; wheel guns firing and car jacks jacking; the sound moved through the rows shaking our seats as we sat on the edges of them.
We can only imagine, whatever set up Hans Zimmer used to make this score, was absolutely obliterated by the time he finished. Probably caught fire at some point and now it’s just ash. Because that man was cooking with a blend of 90% gasoline and 10% renewable ethanol, known as E10 fuel for this one. Two of the best scores last year were snubbed, in our humble opinions. Challengers and Dune: Part Two, the latter composed by Zimmer. F1 score is as if he took both of these for inspiration and said I’m coming for vengeance.
If we were betting people… we’d never bet against Brad Pitt, Kerry Conden, and Javier Bardem. Whoever’s idea it was to get two of the most charming and commanding presences, and have one fall in love with the Kerry Conden deserves a goddamn raise, or trophy, or at least a hug from someone. Every one of these actors are fully capable of giving Oscar performances for a dramatic role. But here, they are still giving their all and they look like they are having a blast.
The story has some familiar tropes; the beaten and battered old guy who has the wisdom; the young and ruthless guy that has the chops to be great, but does he have the self-control?; the desperate call for help and needing the answer to a long-shot prayer; the predictable love story. It has it all. But the gears are greased, the wheels are hot, and this film uses the tried and true to not only get you passed the finish line, but with a smile on your face as if you are right there in the pit crew—a bunch of imperfect ragamuffins you no longer call colleagues but family.
The theater adds a whole lot to this cinematic experience. From the visuals to the sounds to the silence where you didn’t realize you were holding your breath until the silence is broken by dozens of people exhaling at the same time. It’s worth the price of admission.
Watch it on the big screen.

BUGONIA by Yorgos Lanthimos
One thing you can count on Yorgos for when it comes to his movies - they are going to be weird, horny, and fun. Jesse Plemons with a pony tail, Green Day in the trailer, idk what the hell is happening but I think I’m into it. Also, how have Emma Stone and Yorgos managed to put out one movie every year for the past three years in a row?
