Sweet & Condensed: Civil War
Scorecard, favorite comfort watch, watchlist, special pod, new red cap essay
Dev Patel broke his hand making Monkey Man, and Alex Garland said making Civil War has him questioning his future as a director. That's the dedication we want to bring you with this newsletter. We will not stop until the carpal tunnel and screen-induced blindness set in 😤
Here is what we have for you this week:

This week’s movie - “Civil War”
Letterboxd Description:
In the near future, a group of war journalists attempt to survive while reporting the truth as the United States stands on the brink of civil war.
Best Watched With
Anyone who will watch a movie for the sake of the art, and won't mind really heavy subject matter. Bonus if they are journalists or photo buffs.
End credit thought
People looking for clear cut sides and the origin of the civil war will be disappointed. This movie deals with being in the tension and middle (literally) of two waring sides.
What takes place on the screen is difficult to watch, but is delivered with expert and delicate care from the entire cast and crew.
The actors deliver subtle humor that breaks up the anxiety-inducing action, but there’s no avoiding how emotionally heavy the story is. Our minds were racing from beginning to end (they still are).
We feel divided (no pun intended) on whether or not you should see this on the big screen. Not because it isn't a great film (it is), but this movie will not be for everyone. Half of the people we saw it with loved it, the other half wished they had never seen it.
Our favorite comfort movie
Josh - A comfort movie is one that I can put on before going to bed—one that I am so familiar with that I know just about every moment, but I don't mind falling asleep before it's over. My go-to is The Social Network. I've probably fallen asleep to it 101 times. Other comfort movies are Molly's Game, Good Will Hunting, The Big Short, and Pulp Fiction. The last one might make you think I'm a sociopath, and I understand.
Sarah - My favorite comfort movie is The Holiday. It’s so wholesome, Kate Winslet is the queen, Jack Black deserves more romantic leads, and Arthur’s melody always brings a tear to my eye. And don’t even get me started on Mr. Napkin Head!!!!!
Kelly - I’m well aware this answer makes me sound like a psychopath okay. BUT if I’m home alone, doing laundry (kid free) and I have the freedom to put on whatever my heart desires, I will put on a campy slasher movie. Some of personal faves: I know What You Did Last Summer, Red Eye, House of Wax, Joy Ride or even like a psychological thriller like Gone Girl really does it for me. I’m not really too sure what that says about me. But I won’t be asking 😅
Eric - LOTR - The Two Towers. Anytime I’m sick, this sucker is turned ON. While I may crash out when the Ents are on screen (don’t shoot me), I’m feeling wide awake and rejuvenated during the Battle of Helm’s Deep. Every single time baby.
New Mexico Drew - Before I had kids, it was Shaun of the Dead and Nacho Libre. But since I’ve had kids, anytime I feel like feeling good, I go straight to Toy Story 4 and Coco. Duke Kaboom, Woody, and the alebrijes never let me down.

Joker: Folie à Deux (2024) written & directed by Todd Phillips
The first Joker film was well done, but we wouldn’t go so far as to say we enjoyed it. So when the sequel was announced, we weren’t exactly marking our calendars. But since then, the trailer has dropped, we’ve heard there are at least 15 cover songs performed, and we still don’t know anything about it. Color us intrigued.
Letterboxd Description:
A sequel to the 2019 film Joker.
(Lol, not even Letterboxd knows what the hell this movie is about)
Other movies written & directed by Todd Phillips:
